Paris 1900 was the first edition which allowed women to compete as women were not allowed to participate in the 1896 edition. 

Meanwhile, the 1904 edition in St. Louis (Missouri) was the first Olympics to hand out gold, silver and bronze medals. 

Since the first edition of the modern Olympic games in 1896, there have been innovations and adoptions.

Paris 2024 Olympics 

There have been 31 editions of the Summer Olympics since the first one in 1896, although two editions were technically cancelled due to two World Wars. 

France’s capital, Paris, will host the 32nd edition this year, joining London as the two cities to have hosted the Summer Olympics three times. 

This year’s event is set 100 years after Paris hosted the same event in 1924. The City of Love as it is famously called was awarded the hosting rights in 2017. 

There will be a total of 45 sports in this year’s Summer Olympics across 35 venues.

A total of 10,500 athletes from 209 nations are expected to compete in 329 events for 5,084 medals, with 329 being gold medals. 

The ceremony officially kicks off on July 26, 2024, and will run till August 12, 2024.

However, sports like football and rugby will start two days before the opening ceremony night. 

One new sport that will make its Olympic debut in Paris is Break Dancing. Meanwhile, sports like 3x3 Basketball, Sport climbing, Skateboarding and Surfing also return after making their debuts in Tokyo 2020.
