Where does Francesco Totti rank in Serie A all-time top scorer list? 

The Italian Serie A is one of the most popular leagues in world football. A top five league in Europe, Serie A in the 80s-mid 2000s used to be what the Premier League is now. It was the most popular league in the world at that time. 

The league has produced some of the greatest players to play the beautiful game. Amongst these players are/were attackers known for their quality in front of the goal. 

Despite its status as a defensive league, especially in the 90s, the quality of attackers in Serie A history is arguably on par or better than other leagues in the world. 

As a result, let us take a look at the top ten scorers in Serie A history. 

10. Alessandro Del Piero, Alberto Gilardino and Giuseppe Signori- 188 goals 

Kicking off the list in tenth place are Alessandro Del Piero, Alberto Gilardino and Giuseppe Signori. Del Piero is one of those special players as he played for just one club throughout his time in Italy’s top flight, Juventus. 

The former Italy international scored 188 goals for the Old Lady in 478 appearances despite playing mostly as a supporting striker. It would have been even more if he had not dropped down with Juventus after they were demoted to Serie B for match fixing. 

Levelled with Del Piero is Signori, who played his first Serie A game in 1991 and played his last in 2004. However, unlike Del Piero, Signori scored his 188 goals for four different clubs- Foggia (11), Lazio (107), Sampdoria (3) and Bologna (67). 

Gilardino also scored 188 goals, although he also has more appearances than Del Piero and Signori (514). The former Italy international played for ten different clubs, including AC Milan and Parma. However, he was most prolific at Fiorentina, where he scored 52 goals. 

9. Kurt Hamrin- 190 goals 

For modern day football fans, the Swedish striker they associate with the Italian league is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But before Ibrahimovic, two Swedish strikers had already made their mark in Serie A, and one of them was Hamrin. 

Hamrin played in the league between 1956 and 1971 for clubs like Juventus, Padova, Napoli, Fiorentina and AC Milan. He scored 190 goals during this time, with almost all of those goals coming in the colours of La Viola (150). 

8. Ciro Immobile- 201 goals 

Immobile is the only player in the top ten still playing, although not in the Serie A. One of the most prolific strikers the league has seen, Immobile has scored 201 goals in 353 appearances, including 169 in 270 appearances for Lazio. The Besiktas man also played for Torino (27 goals) and Genoa (5 goals). 

7. Roberto Baggio- 205 goals 

Baggio is arguably the most talented and best Italian player of all time, and he has the goal catalogue to back it up. The former Italy star scored 205 goals during his time in Serie A (1985-2004). 

Baggio played for a host of clubs, including the BIG 3 and Fiorentina. His most prolific time was with Juventus, where he scored 78 goals in 141 appearances. 

6. Antonio Di Natale- 209 goals 

Di Natale’s 209 goals in 445 appearances are not only impressive but arguably the best, considering he did not play for any of Italy’s big clubs.

Di Natale spent most of his career at Udinese, where he scored 191 goals in 385 games. He also had a short spell at Empoli, scoring 18 goals in 59 games. 

4. Giuseppe Meazza and José Altafini- 216 goals 

In joint fourth position is Meazza. Meazza, regarded as one of the greatest Italian strikers of all time, played for Italy’s big three, but spent most of his time with Inter. 

The two-time World Cup winner scored 216 goals in Serie A, 197 in 303 appearances for the Nerazzurri. Meazza also scored nine goals for Inter’s city rivals and another 10 for the Old Lady. 

Levelled with Meazza is Jose Altafini, who is one of the few players who represented two nations at the international level- Italy and Brazil. 

Altafini is one of the most gifted strikers to play in Serie A. He played for Juventus, AC Milan and Napoli. Altafini scored 120 goals for Milan, 71 for Napoli and 25 for Juventus. 

3. Gunnar Nordahl- 225 goals 

Kicking off the top three is Gunnar Nordahl, who is arguably the greatest Swedish striker to play in Serie A- sorry, Ibrahimovic. Nordahl scored an astonishing 255 goals in 291 appearances. 

His goal ratio of 0.77 per game is the best among the players in the top ten. Nordahl scored a majority of his goals in Milan’s colours- 210 in 257 games. He also scored 15 in 34 games for Roma.

2. Francesco Totti- 250 goals 

The greatest AS Roma player of all time and one of the best Italian players of all time sits in second place. Totti spent all his career at AS Roma, showing his loyalty located in the eternal city of Rome. The 2006 World Cup winner with Italy scored 250 goals in 619 appearances for the Giallorossi.

He might not have won a whole lot with Roma, but he made Roma relevant. 

1. Silvio Piola- 274 goals

Sitting at the top spot is Piola, who played in the league between 1929 and 1954. Piola played for four clubs in Serie A, Pro Vercelli, Lazio, Juventus and Novara. 

He scored 274 goals during his time in the league, including 143 goals in 227 appearances for Lazio. Piola also scored 10 for Juventus, 70 for Novara and 51 for Vercelli.
